Questions for the Future
SOAS, London
Sponsors to date:
How water is managed is becoming an increasingly important issue
for discussion amongst politicians as well as the water and
agricultural industries. Population growth, climate change impacts,
the tightening of regulation to achieve sustainable management and
the current drought are increasing the pressure and competition for
available water resources. Many water and farming issues are long
standing and clearly require more integrated solutions that meet
the needs of society and farmers; we can't afford to continue the
silo thinking. This conference takes an in depth look at the key
farming and water issues.
Seven questions have been identified to focus the
discussion:
- Water Resources: What are the current water needs of the
agricultural and horticultural sector, and how can they be met in
the short and long term?
- Water Quality: How do we best deliver the tools?
- Integration: What is the combined and cumulative impact of
flooding and water resource policies on the capacity to produce
food in England and Wales (NFU)
- Is paying farmers to deliver appropriate ecosystem goods and
services the way forward.
- What part is developing policy to play in farming and water
issues? What drivers and incentives should be used?
- Needs, advice and incentives to farmers? Getting nowhere
fast?
- Can we develop an integrated view?
