    Glyn Ellis Presentation Competition

    18:15 to 20:15

Glyn Ellis was a Fellow of CIWEM, a professional reviewer and Secretary of the North Western and North Wales Branch. He had a passion for helping those at the start of their careers to gain the skills they need to become fully qualified professionals.

The Glyn Ellis Prize has been created in his memory by his friends and colleagues in the Branch.

The prize will be awarded to the best short presentation on a water or environmental subject.

Entrants should be between 16 and 30 years of age (inclusive) on the date of the completion. They do not need to be members of CIWEM.

    The presentations:

    • Should last no longer than 15 minutes (there will be marks allocated to timing)
    • May be on any subject related to water or the environment
    • Must be developed and delivered by the author

First prize is £200 and a certificate, the runner up prize is £100

Please send a synopsis (approximately 100 words) of your talk to Briony Harvey by the 17th April 2012.

A panel of Branch committee members will judge the competition and award prizes based on the presentations given at the meeting.

Full rules and guidance can be downloaded below.

    Routes to membership presentation

Whilst the judges retire to make their decision Tom Owen and Laura Brown from the CIWEM membership team will outline the membership process and explain the changes that are about to come into force.

    One to one membership sessions

    14:00 to 17:30

There will be a number of one to one discussion sessions on your route to membership with Tom Owen or Laura Brown from the CIWEM membership team available. Pre booking is essential - please contact Briony Harvey to make an appointment.

    Mandatory competencies workshop

    17:30 to 18:00

One of the questions asked most often about the membership process at branch meetings is what do the mandatory competencies mean and how you can demonstrate your experience. This half hour open workshop will take you through the competencies and give advice on how to present your experience.

In order to help us plan the event and catering please email Briony Harvey if you want to attend the competencies workshop or come as a member of the audience for the Glyn Ellis competition.

Thanks to the kind support of United Utilities this is a free event.

    Sustainability at the Olympic Park

    18:30 to 20:30 (Refreshments from 18:00)

Joint meeting with the Institution of Civil Engineers Cheshire Branch.

Mercure Chester East Hotel, Whitchurch Road, Christleton, CH3 5QL

The London 2012 Olympics will be the greenest, most sustainable Olympics ever. This statement was one of the
most eye catching statements made by the bid team when London was awarded the Olympics. Delivering such a
promise in a contaminated, industrial site in East London seemed almost unthinkable.
However this summer the British construction industry will be proud to demonstrate that we delivered against this
promise. We also delivered the Olympic Park to time and budget, despite many doubts when the work first begun.
This presentation focuses on sustainability aspects of delivering the Olympic Park. From the treatment of
contaminated soil, monitoring of plant exhaust gases and delivery logistics, right the way through to delivering the largest new green space in the UK.
Peter Braithwaite is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Chartered Environmentalist, being a Fellow of the
ICE. Over the 35 years since graduating as a civil engineer, Peter has had a varied international career in the built environment. He joined CH2M HILL in 2008, after 27 years working for Arup leading their environmental and
sustainability services, to become Head of Sustainability for CLM the Delivery Partner to the Olympic Delivery
Authority for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games. He was responsible for leading the sustainability
team and delivering the Olympic Delivery Authority's Sustainable Development Strategy on time and within budget.
In recognition of his work in sustainability, Peter was conferred as Honorary Professor in the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham in 2006.
