CIWEM WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT
CIWEM is pleased to announce that David Wilkes has taken
over from Gerard Morris as CIWEM president.
David Wilkes' prime presidential theme for the year will be
'thought leadership'. It will focus particularly on how we train
the next generation into qualified individuals, sharing expertise
and best practice amongst fellow professionals, and being an
independent and trusted public voice.
Professionally, he is associate director for Arup, based in
Leeds, where he works on a multitude of projects involved with
flood risk, environmental matters and planning. One of his
major clients is the Environment Agency. He is also developing an
increasing portfolio of Expert Witness flood related work.
Before joining Arup, David had a 30 year career with the
Environment Agency and its predecessor organisations, where amongst
other jobs he managed the Thames Barrier and Flood Defences for
London. During the 2001 Foot and Mouth epidemic he managed the
protection of water resources for Yorkshire.
David Wilkes is a graduate of the University of Durham where he
studied engineering sciences with management. Outside of working
hours he enjoys the outdoors, cycling, skiing and sailing, when
opportunity permits. He has helped establish a Duke of Edinburgh
Awards division within the local scout group and supported 25 gold,
70 silver and over 100 bronze award recipients.
