STIRLINGSHIRE HYDRO SCHEME POWERS AHEAD
The first of potentially dozens of mini-hydro power
schemes using old waterworks around Scotland has started generating
renewable energy.
Touch water treatment works in the hills west of Stirling became
surplus to requirements last year and Scottish Waters commercial
and renewable energy business, Horizons, began exploring the
possibility of it being used for hydro power.
It has now started generating for the National Grid following
the installation of a 52kilowatt turbine to capture the energy from
water flowing down pipelines from hilltop reservoirs.
The scheme has seen £400,000 invested and is expected to
generate 300Megawatt hours per year. Horizons expects to see a
return on its investment within six years. Income from Touch will
be reinvested by Horizons into further renewable energy
projects.
