Experts in China believe that a rise in birth defects can be attributed to poor environmental conditions.

According to China's National Population and Family Planning Commission, every 30 seconds a child is born with physical defects resulting from a poor environment.  This rate is 40 percent higher than that of 2001.

The worst area for such cases is Shanxi, where experts blame emissions from the coal and chemical industries.
