The Prince of Wales is leading a plan to combat
deforestation in Indonesia. The plan was first revealed in November 2009 with a goal of reducing deforestation rates by 25 per cent by 2015, with the idea that wealthier countries would pay developing countries to maintain their rainforests.
Norway has committed to giving Indonesia $1billion (approximately £694million) on condition that all new conversion of peat and forest lands will be suspended. The plan, which will be monitored by independent inspectors, includes the permanent protection of some rainforest.
Indonesia has become the third largest carbon dioxide emitter, losing an area of forest the size of Wales every year.
