Low Carbon Society

Evidence for man-made climate change is clear. Although our understanding of its implications, and the precise nature of the emissions reductions required to ensure it remains within bearable limits, continues to evolve, we know enough. Without action on an unprecedented global level, the future of humankind is bleak.  We must make radical changes to society's infrastructure and behaviour to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and invest heavily so that future generations are able to meet their needs. In other words, we must become a low carbon society. Doing so is economically feasible, and could yet establish more sustainable and secure ways of life and a new era of global cooperation and justice. The Climate Change Act has set the UK in the right direction, but delivering on its ambition must be society's foremost focus from now on.

CIWEM's work on creating a low carbon society is coordinated through its Sustainability and Environmental Management technical panel and the Climate Change Network.
