December/January 2008 Volume 13 Number 1 Savings begin at home When it comes to the environment, most people are only too pleased to consider the 'win win' solutions if they are given clear information. When I say 'win win' I mean the environmental solutions that help the environment whilst also saving you money, or making life more comfortable. Industry - after some cajoling - has come to understand that good environmental management can save money and make businesses run more efficiently. Energy and water savings could similarly be made in the home. The trouble is good, unbiased advice is thin on the ground and none of us want to splash out on the latest techno-fix only to find it demoted to the bargain basement the following month because it did not live up to expectations. Well, WEM is here to help out. Marcus Zipperlen of the Centre for Alternative Technology is offering some tried-and-tested advice on saving water in the home on page 18 and 'Saving It In Style' on page 22 looks at some of the design solutions created by students at the Royal College of Art. We also give you some advice on making this Christmas green and ethical on page 16. Not one to avoid the difficult questions when it comes to the environment, Nick Reeves tackles the sensitive issue of population on page four and Jonathan Ives reports on plans to make the 2012 Olympics sustainable on page 24. Don't miss the CIWEM Environmental Photographer of 2007 on page ten. I welcome your comments and wish you all the best for the festive season..
