September 2008 Volume 13 Number 8 This month's edition of WEM has a real feeling of optimism. We feature a number of stories that show just how we can adapt our lives for the better of the environment and learn from past mistakes. That is not to say that is doesn't offer readers some challenges. As always I welcome your letters and emails on the issues debated and also your insights into how the balancing act of living in a culture dominated by consumption with the knowledge of the urgent need to reduce carbon emissions may best be negotiated. Nick Reeves opens the debate, highlighting how green spaces could be of benefit to health on page four. Read my account of an inspirational conference on art and ecology held at the University of Falmouth on page six, Sir Michael Pitt writes about his recommendations to the Government for tackling flooding on page 12 and Ryan Dalton offers an American perspective on environmental activism on page 17. Ebby Nanzala describes how Masai women are modifying lifestyles to enable their families to adapt to changing weather patterns on page 21 and David Buckland gets the final word, concluding our serialisation of Burning Ice on page 24. On a practical note, we offer some ideas for greener gardening on page 14. And on page 26 you will find some fascinating facts on global transportation. It would be great to hear your environmental 'good news stories' too. So please take the time to contact me at wemeditor@ciwem.org.
